It was written in 1984, his 31st play, and premiered in Scarborough in the Stephen Joseph Theater before transferring to The Olivier, National Theater in London. It won The Evening Standard Best Comedy Award, the Olivier Best Comedy Award and the DRAMA Best Comedy Award in 1985.
